We Don’t Just Sit Around!
There’s a common misconception about getting older.
Some folks seem to think that once you reach a certain age, you spend your days sitting in a rocking chair, watching television, feeding the birds, and waiting for the mailman.
Well, let me tell you something.
Those people have absolutely no idea how busy old folks can be!
We have things to do!
First, there’s the morning routine. Get out of bed, locate the glasses, find the coffee, remember why we walked into the kitchen, and try to figure out what day it is.
That’s practically a full day’s work before breakfast.
Then come the appointments. Doctor appointments, dentist appointments, eye appointments, prescription refills, and follow-up appointments to discuss the appointments we just had.
At some point, we need a personal assistant just to keep track of all the paperwork.
And don’t forget shopping. We go to the grocery store for three things and come home with twelve. Naturally, we forget the one thing we actually went there to buy.
Some of us have discovered the internet, too. We’re checking Facebook, watching YouTube, playing games, reading the news, taking pictures, and occasionally arguing with strangers who probably need a nap as badly as we do.
Technology has given us a whole new set of problems.
Passwords, updates, verification codes, suspicious emails, and those little messages asking us to prove we’re not robots.
I’ve been around a while, and I never thought I’d have to prove my humanity to a computer!
Then there’s the hobby department.
Some of us are woodworking, gardening, fishing, traveling, cooking, restoring old cars, taking photographs, or learning something we never had time to learn when we were younger.
Others are writing blogs, sharing stories, making friends online, and discovering that retirement doesn’t necessarily mean slowing down.
And yes, we take naps.
Don’t judge us.
A nap isn’t laziness. It’s a scheduled maintenance period. Even the best machinery needs servicing!
But here’s what I think is most important.
Getting older doesn’t mean we’re finished living. It doesn’t mean our curiosity disappears, our opinions become irrelevant, or our sense of humor has to retire.
We’ve accumulated a few wrinkles, a few aches, and enough stories to keep a room full of people entertained.
We may move a little slower, take a little longer to remember a name, and occasionally need help opening a jar.
But we’re still interested in the world around us. We still have things we want to accomplish, places we’d like to see, people we’d like to meet, and plenty left to say.
We’re not sitting on the sidelines. We’re just playing the game with a different set of rules!
So, here’s a question for all the old folks visiting the Coffee Shop:
What keeps you busy these days?
Are you still working, enjoying retirement, pursuing hobbies, traveling, writing, playing games, spoiling the grandchildren, or simply trying to keep up with the latest technology?
And be honest…
How many of you have ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went in there?
Pull up a chair, pour yourself another cup, and tell us what keeps you going.
Around here, everybody has a story, and nobody is too old to have a little fun.
Keep your coffee strong, your humor stronger, and remember:
Getting older is mandatory. Growing old is optional.
